A New Perspective On Horse Riding
I started my journey into horse riding with only one goal in mind: to win. The idea of competition was what motivated me---until my eye-opening experience in 2021, when I participated in a charity event "Ride in Unison" where I realized the true power of horses and how they can go beyong just being athletes.
This huge shift came as I learned more about the equestrian community. One of the most profound impacts was my idol, Hua Tian, an equestrian sportsman who competes in eventing for China. His approach to riding resonated with me deeply: he never view horse riding as a sport only. He stresses on the bond between the rider and horse, and how the sport can be used to positively impact people like me. He opened my eyes to the idea that horse riding could be about healing rather than chasing.
this is why I was so excited to be involved in the charity event, "Ride in Unison", again in 2023. It was located at the Shanghai Longines Equestrian Club, where parents and children who might be interested in horse riding can come together to experience the world of horses. The event introduce kids to the basics of horse care, like handling a horse and even making hay balls.
Equestrianism is a niche sport compared to other mainstream ones. But through these simple moments, we're breaking the barriers and creating awareness that horse riding can be for everyone!
This is when I started to feel I was making genuine connections between people and horses, and between individuals themselves. That's why I am also working towards earning my BHS Stage 2 coaching certificate next summer. With this certification, I'll be able to choach children and focus on the therapeutic side of the sport, not just winning a race.
For me, horse riding is a journey that connects with not only the horses but also with people---whether here in China or abroad.
